I purposely titled this post See State Fair instead of the multitude of other titles that would make more since. Over the years, I average going to the Western Idaho State Fair every other year. From one year to the next, the fair can be boring. Seeing basically the same thing every year. Granted, some events and rides will be in different locations to make room for one or two new ones.
Over the past several years, I chose to do something a little different. I would go with an individual or a group and experience the fair not just with them, but through their eyes.
The first year I did this was with my daughter, who was in college. She refused to walk through the livestock barns with me. It was more a whirlwind trip without going on any rides.
Then, a couple of years later, I went with a family whose youngest was in their mid-fifties. The oldest was in their eighties. Because of this family’s history with horses and livestock, we spent the bulk of our time with the animals. Of course, we have to attend to this one vendor who the family considered their milk shakes the best.
This year I went with a friend who liked the exhibits. We did a short walk through where all the vendors were. We stopped and stood in amazement at the artwork done with quilted blankets. Our travels slowed when we got to the painting. Especially one with trees and mountains. That was no surprise, considering we are in Idaho.
I observed other people going through the fair trying to take in the whole thing in one day. I cannot do it. I am seventy years old without the energy of a twenty-year-old. I would rather take and savor those few things and enjoy their richness. By going to the fair with some and seeing it through their eyes, lets me gain a new perspective on what is there.
This perspective of going to an event who someone else’s eyes has so enriched my perspective of life. I plan on doing this with Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and any other event that sparks my interest.
I am taking applications for individual or individuals who are willing to show me a happening through their eyes. Be warned, I will most likely write about it afterwards.
