I’m always up for a good detective murder mystery. Especially, if it gives me a new twist on an established formula. When I saw the trailer to The Sheep Detectives I wanted to watch it. I count it as a privilege when I was able to get tickets to a Thursday showing of The Sheep Detectives.
Granted Hugh Jackman was billed in the lead role. I believe that was to get people’s attention and draw them into the theaters. The truth is Hugh was the murder victim. But his ghost appeared a few times to help the sheep.
The true stars were the sheep. A cast of big names like Patrick Stewart, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus among a host of others lending their voices to the sheep. None of them were dumb sheep, they were all expanding beyond their comfort zone.
In a melodramatic way, the sheep help a not so bright policeman solve the murder by taking bits and pieces from stories they were read by their shepherd. I loved that throughout the movie the sheep came up with a suspect and eliminated through evidence.
In a time where things seem to be going in the wrong direction, this movie lets you know things can turn out okay, if not better than before.
