Rita Jacobs stands on the edge of a canyon.
She looks down and sees a raging river.
Fear grips Rita for she wants to cross.
She takes two large steps back.
Rita gets pulled toward the mesa.
Every day she goes to the ledge and looks.
Every day Rita turns and walks away.
Today the pull is different.
Across the ravine, Rita’s dream fades from view.
The dream she has always wanted.
Rita has worked to make it a reality.
Many had encouraged her.
One time Rita tried walking to the left.
Another time, she tried the right.
Rita thought of building a bridge.
She always ends up where she is now.
Rita knows she had to jump across the trench.
She told herself she could not.
Rita believes herself to fail.
Falling into the raging river below.
Today Rita must take that leap across the stream.
Or she must give up on her dream.
Rita’s dream is fading from view.
She runs and leaps over the steam.
