Spider Noir – A Twist on the Classic

After having an interesting phone conversation, I went to Amazon Prime Video and watched Spider-Noir.

I started watching it with the expectation that it would be a new twist on the classic Spider-Man movies. I didn’t know how to take the option of watching it in black and white or in color. I chose color.

I must admit that the cinematography made me feel as if I were watching an old crime drama taking place in post World War I New York City. I will certainly watch all eight episodes again, but in black and white.

The title warns us that this series of eight episodes will be dark. Granted, for being dark the writers gave us a refreshing view on the classic modern day Spider Man. Picture an aged Spider man who wants a more sedate lifestyle who smokes and drinks.

Nicolas Cage pulls off the aged Spiderman who retires to become a Sam Spade type character. He has moved on from the mantra “With great ability comes great responsibility” to “I don’t want this ability and its responsibility.”

This Spider-Man character (Ben Reilly) is back in using his abilities against the mob and a host of villainous characters.

At various points in this series, we do get nods to the more modern web slinger like Spider’s love interest and the name of the newspaper.

Like so many movies of this type, I get disappointed with the ending. For my part I would like to see another eight episodes of this character’s story line.
